South American Casinos See Significant Upswing in August

South American gambling houses experienced a significant upswing in August, marking the first complete month of activity since the start of 2020.

The Chilean gaming oversight body, the Superintendence of Casinos of Games (SCJ), declared that the sector generated £11.8 million / €13.8 million / $16 million in taxes during August, equating to 13.24 billion Chilean pesos.

Total gaming revenue (TGR) reached 40.8 billion Chilean pesos in August.

The regulatory body noted that the industry’s revenue surged this month due to the fact that 25 of Chile’s 26 casinos were operating without interruption throughout August, the first time since the onset of the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic in March 2020.

The only gambling house that remained closed was the Casino Municipal de Natales.

Of the contributions, a total of 6.08 billion Chilean pesos came from casinos operating under Chile’s Casino Law No. 19995. Value-added tax on gambling generated 5.73 billion Chilean pesos, while income tax generated 1.38 billion Chilean pesos.

Regional and municipal authorities of the casinos will receive the necessary gambling taxes in October.

The Sun Monticello casino contributed the most, paying 797.8 million Chilean pesos in taxes to its regional government, as well as municipal taxes.

Viña del Mar enjoyed contributions from the casino of 324.2 million Chilean pesos to its regional government, as well as municipal taxes.

In the meantime, Marina del Sol Talcahuano secured the third position, contributing 302.1 million Chilean pesos to its local administration and municipal tax division.
